I was initially confused at the opening of ‘Black Jesus’ with the teen tearing up the bathroom at Garfield high school. I thought maybe there was another person discovering that he had super powers – because its manifestation resembled so closely what Anissa experienced.
Green Light to destruction
But I was completely wrong. What Bernard was experiencing was ‘Green Light’, the new designer drug and profit center for The 100. After Jefferson uses his Black Lightning powers to subdue Bernard, he finds two unused pills in Bernard’s pocket. He gives them to Gambi for analysis and we find out later in the episode that it is more addictive than any other drug. Even though we see Bernard apologizing to Principal Pierce and vowing to make this a one-time thing, given the addictive powers of the drug he may be making a promise he simply can’t keep.
Fowdy v. Pierce
Nevertheless, Bernard’s drug use has put a wedge between Principal Jefferson Pierce and Vice Principal Fowdy. Ms. Fowdy warns Pierce that the Board is likely to have a zero-tolerance approach to Bernard’s in school ‘Green Light’ experience. Pierce is confident that Bernard is worth a second chance (himself being a beneficiary of a second chance long ago) but Fowdy’s warning is stern and a bit threatening. Pierce asks her why he’s getting the feeling that the board’s response is already a done deal.
Here’s what I think: Ms. Fowdy is none too happy about Pierce and his ex-wife trying to make it work again! Remember in the first episode, at the fundraiser, when Lynn was teasing him about Ms. Fowdy being sweet on him? Lynn’s radar picked up the signal, for sure. Now that Lynn and Jefferson are closer to reconciling – that might be a pulsing beep on Ms. Fowdy’s radar. If Jefferson is no longer a potential love interest, what the heck, why not focus on her career? Specifically, positioning herself with the board to ultimately replace him as principal.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Tobias Whale is in a bit of a pinch. Lady Eve shares the concern she and her business partners have regarding Tobias. Whale has enjoyed their trust based on his reputation as the man who killed Black Lightning. But now he knows (as well as the Freeland police department, news outlets, and law-abiding citizens) that Black Lightning is alive and well and fighting evil.
She reminds Tobias of old superstitions regarding albinos. In less advanced societies, albinos were viewed as magical. There were those who would kidnap and kill albinos, grinding their bones into dust and selling the dust as magic. Lady Eve suggest that if Tobias doesn’t take care of Black Lightning, he will likely be ground into dust.
The truck that got away
Black Lightning has a choice to make: either to follow the truck with the ‘Green Light’ in it or investigate the odd explosions he heard. The explosions win out. Though Black Lightning doesn’t see who was the cause of the noise (his daughter Anissa). The truck gets away. And, I can’t help but wonder if this decision will come back to haunt him.
Black Lightning Black Jesus Recap Season 1 Episode 4 odds and ends:
- Black Lightning is operating without two very interesting bits of information: that his daughter Anissa is dealing with nascent super powers and that Tobias Whale is still alive (while Whale is very much aware that Black Lightning is still alive).
- I feel sorry for the coroner that gave Tobias the wrong information – he gets a brutal death by brass knuckles from Whale’s henchman. I was surprised it wasn’t Syonide.
- Reality check: Khalil’s mom is working a second job to pay for his medical bills. I think Reverend Holt should sell his watch, or at least pass the basket for Khalil.
- Given that Tobias Whale has his sights on Khalil as a means of swaying public opinion against Black Lightning, I found myself wondering if ‘Green Light’ would end up giving Khalil the ability to walk again (in spite of its nasty side effects).
- Lady Eve is a mortician. Gotta say, I would rather watch her write a thank you note than prepare a dead (or is it!!!) body with embalming fluid.
- I can’t find any connection between the episode titles and the episodes themselves. Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning has been referred to as Black Jesus in every episode (I’m pretty sure). The title could be like my subheads…have to come up with something.
