The Alienist A Fruitful Partnership Recap Season 1 Episode 2 – Each member of Kreizler’s team is making important discoveries. They are definitely on the trail of a serial killer. “His conscious thoughts are fixed on violence,”Kreizler notes with the warning that if they get too close the violence may spill on to them.

As much as I like Miss Howard (she is the character who risks the most and endures the most), I adore the Isaacson twins. Do you know the difference between Capitalism and Socialism? Marcus explains it this way to Lucius, “In Capitalism, man exploits man. In Socialism, it’s the other way around.”
Discriminated against within a police department chock full of bigotry, corruption and excessive force, the Isaacson twins’ brilliance has at long last found an outlet in Dr. Kreizler’s investigation.
The Isaacson twins are getting their absolute collective geek on as they explore just which sort of weaponry could be used to both cut through muscle and tendons and then delicately pluck out eyeballs. The ‘Arkansas Toothpick’ of course!
They are also excited about the new science of dactyloscopy – fingerprint identification – especially since there is a big, clear, bloody fingerprint on the pocket watch found in Georgio Santorelli’s things.
A Fruitful Partnership
The title of this episode comes from the toast Dr. Kreizler makes at dinner with Marcus, Lucius, John Moore, and Miss Howard present. But is this a partnership? Is Dr. Kreizler a master motivator, bringing the right people together to meet a challenge that is a siren song to their natural/professional curiosity? Or is he a master manipulator?
I’m very curious about the history between Kreizler and Commissioner Roosevelt. Roosevelt seems wary of Kreizler but also mysteriously sympathetic or indebted. I get the feeling he’d be happy if he never saw Kreizler again.
The Aspiring Miss Howard
She’s the first female full time hire at the NYPD – who wasn’t “hired to scrub the floors.” She works but clearly has no need to work.
As a trailblazer, Miss Howard has to deal with the worst her colleagues in the police department have to offer. And at the top of the list of ‘the worst’ is Captain Connor. When he’s not shaking down business owners, he’s taking pay offs from brothel owners Ellison and Kelly, and most recently beating members of the Santorelli family to ensure they cease pestering the police on Georgio’s murder.
While enduring, what seems to be routine creepiness on Connor’s part, she notices the blood and scrapes on his knuckles. Later, accompanied by John Moore, Miss Howard pays a visit on the Santorellis and learns what Captain Connor and the “Holy Joe” expected of them and a little bit more about Georgio.
Later, in what would be a more dangerous move than that of visiting the tenements where the Santorellis lived, Miss Howard sneaks into Captain Connors office and rifles through a locked drawer – finding two files. They are the murder files of two other boys, killed in the same way Georgio was.
Patterns are emerging. As Kreizler explains to his partners, “Each and every one of the choices he makes will reveal a hidden aspect of his alienated mind.”
Kreizler enjoys poking at John Moore. He agitates him by suggesting an attraction to Miss Howard. Moore has a few drinks at dinner which only results in giving Kreizler’s jabs more sting. “What is my role in all this?” he asks Kreitzler. “Perhaps you’ve already played it.” The doctor replies. Moore’s had enough and turns down an offer of a ride home in Kreizler’s cab.
He finds himself at one of Kelly and Ellison’s establishments – one that features young teenage boys – with either Kelly or Ellison pouring him free drinks. And…you could see it coming…his drink is spiked. He learns from one of the boys that Georgio had a lot of high-paying regulars. But one who stood out, a man with a silver smile. (Earlier in the episode we see a young boy asking a man “what’s wrong with your mouth?”) As Kreizler noted, slowly a picture will form of the killer.
But what about poor John Moore? With the room spinning and his vision blurred, the room becomes crowded with Ellison, Kelly, possibly Captain Connor, and some of the boys. Fortunately, Kreizler sent Stevie to follow Moore. Will someone be able to intervene in time?
The Alienist A Fruitful Partnership Recap Season 1 Episode 2 odds and ends:
- “She is not as strong as she’d like you to believe.” “He’s not as strong as he’d like you to believe.” I had to laugh with Kreizler as he heard Moore and Miss Howard make identical observations about one another.
- “I don’t think the wine is kosher.” Lucius Isaacson
- “A little resentment and introspection will do him good.”
- Why did Mary drop the tea service? Is she concerned for Miss Howard? Jealous?
