Black Lightning LaWanda The Book of Burial Recap Season 1 Episode 3 – The funeral of LaWanda White has become a tipping point in the Freeland community. The Reverend Holt preaches to his congregation that they should pick up where LaWanda left off – they should march to take back the streets from The 100.

Neither Inspector Henderson nor Jefferson Pierce think this is a good idea. When Henderson pleads with Reverend Holt to let the police do their job and keep the people off the streets, the Reverend points out that he might be inclined to do so if half the department wasn’t being paid off by The 100. Ouch.
But Inspector Henderson points out that unlike the right Reverend, he wears works shoes. And, he’d like to know who’s paying for the Reverend’s $23,000 watch and the silk handkerchief that mops his righteous brow? Ouch.
Up until this point, Jefferson Pierce has been pretty quiet. After Henderson leaves, Pierce makes his own plea about the danger of the march. Reverend Holt reminds Pierce that people of him as the “Black Jesus” (third time in three episodes that we’ve heard this – and next week’s episode is called Black Jesus) but that lately it seems that “the only ones you care about are the ones in your school or the ones in your home.” Ouch.
So the good guys are busy quarreling amongst themselves. What about the bad guys?
Tobias Whale, last seen choking Lala in the jail cell, apparently isn’t the top of the pyramid in the Freeland crime organization. He answers to the evil but charming Lady Eve. Tobias has brought a big bag of money “to cover all of Lala’s stupidity.”
While Lady Eve is big on thank you notes, “My grandmother always told me, If you don’t write a thank you note, it’s like the good thing never happened,” she’s not quick to thank Tobias for the gesture.
Lady Eve is concerned about the big picture. The 100 control through fear. If the people march, and begin to lose fear, the protection money will begin to dry up. “I don’t mind people believing in God. They just can’t believe they can take back these streets.”
While Reverend Holt may like his high-end accessories, at least he’s willing to stand up to The 100. There was another pastor, Lady Eve explains, who “realized the risk in that proposal, and was smart enough to let me know.” Lady Eve wants Tobias and Syonide to instill fear.
Last episode, Jennifer was drinking at school. This episode, she’s announcing to her parents that she is ready to have sex. I know that she and Khalil have discussed this, in fact their conversation is very sweet. “My virgin self couldn’t find you sexier right now.” But is all the acting out a result of the abduction?
The climax of the episode is, of course the march, and everyone is there for it. Black Lightning saves the day, but not without the Reverend Holt taking a bullet that rips through his shoulder and then hits…Khalil.
In the very last minutes we discover that Tobias Whale is discovering, much to his surprise, that Black Lightning is alive. And, when we see Mr. Gambi deleting the cctv footage of Tobias, it indicates that, likewise, Black Lightening thought Tobias was dead. Why is Gambi hiding this from Pierce?
Black Lightning LaWanda The Book of Burial Recap Season 1 Episode 3 odds and ends:
- I like that Lynn doesn’t buy Anissa’s lie/excuse of breaking up with Chenoa as the source of the heaviness weighing on her.
- Chenoa does deliver a parting shot by calling Anissa “Miss Black Lives Matters.”
- Jennifer and Anissa have a great relationship, “The girl with the marcher’s shoes and the frequent marching card doesn’t want to go to the march?
- The Jefferson / Khalil confrontation is super awkward.
- Getting a promotion involves getting stabbed through hand – keep that in mind when climbing The 100 criminal ladder. Ouch.
