The nine-episode follow up to FX’s The People vs. OJ Simpson begins with Andrew Cunanan circling in on his last victim, Versace. The photography beautifully contrasts the opulence of life inside the gates with the more ordinary outside the gates.
Not that outside the gates is so bad – it is Miami Beach after all. Metaphorically the gate seems to represent what Cunanan simply can’t have and seemingly the source of his anger. It’s a world he might only occasionally visit but to which he will never belong. Cunanan is constantly on the fringe of the in crowd while at the same time constantly on the fringe of regular people, living regular lives.
It was difficult for me to imagine anyone investing any time in Cunanan. In the series, his grandiose lying isn’t very convincing and seems to expose him for what he is. His stories are seasoned with palpable disdain for and arrogance towards his friends/listeners. He is depicted devoid of any sort of charm. Why would anyone spend any time with him?
The series is based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: the Assassination of Gianni Versace.
The Man Who Would Be Vogue includes flashbacks to San Francisco, where Cunanan first met Versace at an exclusive gay club. He would soon after attend the opera (Versace had designed the costumes) as the guest of the designer. But beyond these two encounters there doesn’t seem to be any other instances of them together or circumstances that would induce a murderous rage in Cunanan. Orth speculates that Cunanan’s antipathy sprung from jealousy that Versace was a global gay icon and Cunanan was not.
The episode depicts the scene of the crime as a chaotic, grotesque circus. Versace’s partner begging the (seemingly stunned) police to call an ambulance while a gawking crowd gathers, one man rushing to his car to grab a camera (no iPhones then) to take a picture of the bloody victim which he later offers to the gathering members of the media, “the bidding starts at $30,000.”
Meanwhile Cunanan, on foot, has managed to elude police. A couple of false starts and cases of mistaken identity allow the murderer to get away.
