This Is Us The Fifth Wheel Recap Season 2 Episode 11
His siblings and mom are asked to do a family therapy season. He apologies to all of them for letting them down, but the therapist feels that he also needs to talk about what he and she have been discussing in their sessions about what has led him to this point.
Kevin talks about feeling left out during his entire childhood and feeling not enough. A feeling that has helped lead him to this addiction. He also calls his family a family of addicts: his dad, his grandfather, and even Kate.
Everyone gets angry: Kate blames the therapist and Rebecca is upset that the therapist would describe Jack as an addict, while Randall lashes out, furious at Kevin for making Rebecca feel bad, accusing him of only wanting attention and dismissing his claims that he was left out as a kid. In turn, Kevin lashes out at Randall, blaming him for driving Tess to run away.
Finally, when Kevin pushes Rebecca to admit that Randall was always her favorite, she breaks down, saying that Randall was just easier. He didn’t leave her, he wasn’t sullen, he was never angry with her.
A Different Trio
Toby, Beth, and Miguel go for drinks after being excluded from the therapy session and it’s kind of awesome to see them interacting together. They talk about being with a Pearson and what it’s like to be part of this family, and it is interesting to see a unique and different perspective on the Pearsons.
Miguel talks about marrying his best friend’s wife. He tries to help the other two understand, what the loss of Jack was like. Also, Toby tells the others about finding junk food in the trash and knowing that Kate’s been hiding it from him.
After the therapy, Kate goes to talk to Kevin alone but Randall finds them both, and they all sit on a bench. Everyone sees their childhood with different lenses and perspectives; Randall apologizes for dismissing Kevin’s during the session, and for not being there for Kevin like Kevin was there for him last year.
Both brothers lean on Kate’s shoulder and take her hand, and soon they’re all laughing together.
Cabin in the Woods
Jack takes the family for a week away in a cabin. Kevin is at camp for the first part of the vacation and when he’s picked up, he feels left out. The problem grows worse, as Jack spends time with Kate, trying to figure out a way to help her with her overeating, and Rebecca accuses Kevin of stealing Randall’s glasses.
Later in the night, Kevin wakes up and it’s storming. He finds Randall’s glasses and goes to take them to his mom but he finds Kate and Randall asleep in bed with their parents. He lies down on the floor beside the bed and goes to sleep.
Back at the rehab facility, Kate admits to Toby that she’s been hiding junk food ever since the miscarriage.
Rebecca goes to talk to Kevin. She remembers never worrying about him when he was a kid because he always seemed so confident and brave, but now she realizes that she was wrong. He promises her he didn’t have an unhappy childhood, but she admits it wasn’t as happy as she always thought.
Back in the cabin, Rebecca wakes up to see Kevin sleeping on the floor. She gets out of bed, lies down beside him, and falls asleep with her arm around him.
It was a heavy episode, and a great return for This Is Us. The therapy session took up a large chunk of it, and almost felt like a play with its complete focus on these characters and what they had to say to each other. It had the family confront some very difficult issues, and delved into how complicated memories can be. But despite all the fighting and yelling, it also showed us how strong a bond there still was between these characters even after all was said and done.
