Vikings The Prisoner Recap Season 5 Episode 5 – In Vikings, Season 5, Episode 5, “The Prisoner,” Ivar springs his surprise against the Saxons in York. Having pretended to abandon the city, the Vikings had actually hidden in the sewers. As soon as the Saxons entered the apparently empty city, Ivar led his men up out of the sewers to massacre their enemies. Aethelred and a remnant of his army flee the city, utterly defeated. Ivar corners Bishop Heahmund, tormenting him at first, even giving him a horse to fight on after his own is killed underneath him, before capturing the warrior cleric. The two leaders have a strange conversation about who the true God is and other, related subjects. Ivar and Heahmund are not so unalike. In any case, Ivar intends to leave England and return to Kattegat to kill Lagertha and Ubbe and make himself king of that town.
Vikings The Prisoner Recap Season 5 Episode 5
Speaking of Kattegat, Floki returns from the unknown land where he had been staying. Lagertha, at first, welcomes the insane boat builder and explorer warmly. Her joy is short lived when she finds him recruiting settlers to return to the new land, which he assures everyone is a paradise blessed by the gods with good farmland. Lagertha needs every warrior she can get to fight off King Harald and Ivar, both of whom are coming to topple her from her place as queen.
Bjorn, Halfdan, Sinric, Kassia, and Commander Euphemius travel through the North African desert to visit Emir Ziyadat Allah, the real power in the Mediterranean. At first, the Emir welcomes his Viking guests warmly, even speaking to them in their own language, learned from the Rus Vikings. He feasts them, introduces them to the pleasures of the hookah pipe, and gives them women for their relaxation.
However, all is not as it seems in the Emir’s encampment. Commander Euphemius absconds and, angrily, the Emir has the heads of three men he holds responsible cut off. Then, the Viking travelers find out, to their horror, that they have been fed meat from Euphemius’ body at a feast. It soon becomes apparent that Kassia is the real power here, and she does not wish the Viking visitors well.
As Bjorn, Halfdan, and Sinric begin to consider that it may be time for them to leave, the Emir has them seized. It appears that a sand storm is approaching. However, before that happens, their host orders their heads to be cut off. It looks like Bjorn and his companions are out of luck.
