This Is Us Number Two Recap Season 2 Episode 9
Losing the Baby
Kate miscarries, leaving both her and Toby devastated. Kate tries to push through, going to a gig and not wanting to wallow at home with Toby, but also avoiding the problem.
At the job, Kate sees parents with their children and starts to break down and leaves. She finds her way to a buffet restaurant and loads up her plate. You don’t’ get a lot of shows that take a realistic look at the way people use food and overeating to deal with emotional turmoil, and This Is Us has always handled it well and this is no exception. Nor can you help but feel proud of Kate when she leaves that plate untouched on the table.
In It Together
Toby gets a text alerting him that a baby bath they ordered is going to be delivered that day, and he makes it his mission to stop it, determined to do anything to stop things being harder for Kate. He goes to the shipping company, and when he thinks he’s too late, he starts hitting his car in rage, but eventually they are able to find the package. You don’t often see Toby lose control, so when it happens it makes quite an impact.
Later, Kate heads home. Toby meets her there and the two have an argument. They fight about how they treated the pregnancy, with Kate feeling that Toby got them too excited too early and stating that the miscarriage happened to her and not to him. Toby makes it perfectly clear that this has happened to him as well in one of the best performances he has given in this entire show.
Mother and Daughter
In the past, Rebecca stumbles upon an application Kate’s been filling out for Berklee College of Music. That night at Kevin’s football game, Rebecca gives Kate fifty dollars to cover her application and Kate is angry that Rebecca went through her stuff and makes it clear that she does not want Rebecca’s help.
At the hospital, after Kevin’s accident, Kate admits that she didn’t tell Rebecca because she couldn’t stand Rebecca being disappointed in her if she was rejected. Rebecca says it’s her fault Kate feels that way but that she will always be there for Kate if she should ever need her.
In the present, Rebecca shows up at Kate’s door and hugs her without saying a word while Kate starts to cry. Later, the two talk. Rebecca can relate to what she’s going through because of her own loss of Kyle, and she urges Kate to talk to Toby about everything.
Later, Kate finally opens up with Toby and really talks about the miscarriage with him and how it makes her feel like she failed him. But she also admits that she wants to try again. And together they are determined that they will not let this break them.
This was an amazing episode. Heartbreaking, full of quiet moments of the characters dealing with their grief, but it felt real and honest and ended on a note of hope and optimism.
