The Walking Dead The Big Scary U Recap Season 8 Episode 5
The episode opens with another flashback, and this time it’s to first episode but from the point of view of the Saviors. Inside the compound, Negan and his captains are having a leadership meeting and grilling Gregory on his plans to restore order. Gregory shares his plan to forcibly steer the Hiltop’s alliance back with the Saviors by threatening death to those that don’t agree. Simon seems to like the idea but adds more to it by suggesting they show up in force and make an example out of some people by publicly executing them in order to make their point clear. Though Negan is clearly psychotic, he’s outraged by Simon’s lack of regard for innocent lives by banging his bat on the table and shouting that “People are a resource!” Just then, Rick arrives and the war begins.
The show then jumps to the present with a subdued Negan and Gabriel in the trailer. Negan seems to be amused by Gabriel and tells him they’ll have to wait this out until they are rescued by the Saviors. Negan also tells him that he witnessed Gabriel risking his life to save Gregory and asks why he would do such a thing for a worthless person. Gabriel tells Negan that perhaps he’s there for a reason and believes God sent him there to take Negan’s confession.
Negan doesn’t ever feel threatened by Gabriel and opens up to him a bit by telling him his backstory. We learn that he used to work with children and that the leadership of the Saviors were chaotic before him. He also wants to learn more about Gabriel and asks him why he became a priest. To that, Gabriel tells him because he loves God and wants to help people with their weakness. Negan shares the same feeling himself because he tells Gabriel helping people with their weaknesses and turning them into strengths is exactly how he’s come so far.
While this is going on, Rick and Daryl are in the middle of a disagreement over how to use some explosives they found in the wreckage of the car chase from the previous episode. Daryl believes they should use it to blow a breach in the compound and allow the walkers to tear everyone apart. Rick doesn’t go along with this because he doesn’t want innocent lives being lost but Daryl is adamant by the plan and grabs the explosives himself. Two end up scuffling and the bag of explosives is accidentally set off. They both watch the ordnance explode and sit in silence. It’s clear the two are on the verge of a larger conflict and go their separate ways with Rick walking to meet with Janice for a better deal.
Back in the trailer, Gabriel pulls Negan’s gun out from his holster and startles him with a misfire. Gabriel then flees to a locked room inside the trailer but Negan somehow keeps his composure and tells him he’ll give him his confession to ease the tension. We learn that Negan had a wife he was a poor husband to and didn’t have the strength to take her out when she got the virus. In that moment of reflection Gabriel comes out the room and the two devise a plan to escape. As we’ve seen many times, by dressing themselves with the guts of a walker, they leave the trailer in disguise to the horde of walkers.
Back in the compound a crisis of leadership is emerging over the whereabouts of Negan and the restlessness of the workers. The seeds of a revolt seem to be happening and the question of who the traitor is hovers over the table with Dwight and Eugene looking the most suspicious to Gavin and Simon.
When workers appear upstairs, they demand to know where Negan is and start to get violent. As things come to a boiling point, Negan finally arrives with Gabriel beside him. Everyone quickly bows down and order seems to be restored. Negan has Gabriel taken to a different room and then tells Eugene it’s his job to fix the situation they are in because very soon they will run out of food and water. The episode ends with Gabriel appearing feverish and seeming to be deathly ill.
