Outlander The Doldrums Recap Season 3 Episode 9 – When Outlander,”The Doldrums” begins, Jamie and Claire prepare to board a ship bound for Jamaica, where they hope to find Ian, who has been kidnapped by a Portuguese ship to be sold into bondage. Accompanying them are Fergus and his new intended bride, Marsali, the daughter of Laoghaire, Jamie’s other wife, and Mr. Willoughby, aka Yi Tien Cho. Since Marsali hates Claire for a whore and likely a witch, the long sea voyage will be a tense one just from the passenger list.
Outlander The Doldrums Recap Season 3 Episode 9
Sailors, being a superstitious lot, are not so sure about having a woman on board, even if she is a trained doctor who can treat their minor injuries. Claire is also introduced to the touching of the horseshoe, nailed into a post above deck, for good luck. With her 20th century sensibilities she thinks that the idea is silly but goes along for peace’s sake.
Jamie spends the early part of the voyage sea sick and being unresponsive to Claire’s ginger tea. However, Willoughby brings out the acupuncture needles and in short order Jamie’s stomach is much better. Around this time, the winds die down and the ship if becalmed, not able to go anywhere. After some time in the doldrums, as the condition of a ship not going anywhere in the age of sail is called, the ship’s crew is pretty sure that one of their number is bad luck, perhaps not having touched the horseshoe as he should have. Jamie persuades the unfortunate man not to throw himself off the top of the mast.
However, the crew is very keen to rid themselves of the bringer of bad luck anyway. Fortunately, Mr. Willoughby noticed the flight of a bird in such a way that suggests a change of weather. To distract the crew, he tells them the story of why he had to leave China. It is a tragic story. He was a poet who attracted the attention of one of the wives of the Emperor. She was anxious to add him to her entourage. However, with the honor comes the loss of his manhood. Rather than become a eunuch, Willoughby fled to Europe. The irony is that European ladies, being bigots, refuse to sleep with a gentleman from China.
While the crew is taking this news in, the wind finally picks up. Joyous at this news, they forget about tossing their shipmate over the side and tend to lowering the sails.
Sometime later, they are intercepted by a British warship. It seems that a sickness has taken a goodly part of the crew, along with every officer but a young lieutenant, as well as the surgeon and his mate. Claire, who recognizes the disease as typhoid, against which she has been inoculated, crosses over to the British ship and proceeds to separate the sick and order the water to be boiled.
The Royal Navy acting captain, seeing that Claire seems to know what she is doing, decides to sail away with her still on board, impressing her into the King’s service. He tries to mollify Claire by noting that his ship and the one with her husband still aboard will both arrive in Jamaica and thus they will be reunited. Claire, not being able to do anything about it, comforts herself with the knowledge that she will be saving lives.
