This Is Us The Most Disappointed Man Recap Season 2 Episode 7
The Two Judges
Randall is one year old, and Rebecca and Jack go before a judge to have their adoption finalized. They expect it to be a simple formality but the judge insists on postponing his decision for another three weeks. An African American man, he wants Randall to go to a black family, believing that Randall needs to be with people who understand who he is and the history, strength, and hardship that goes along it. Rebecca sends him a letter later, insisting that she is Randall’s mother and that as difficult as the situation may be, they will make it work. While the judge remains uncertain, he does decide to turn the case over to another judge who happily completes the adoption.
This happens next to scenes of William being arrested on drug charges and brought before a judge. When the judge says he’s disappointed in William, given his clean record up till now, William says he’s lost his girl, his mother, and his son, and he’s the most disappointed man in the world. His loneliness and isolation is tangible.
The judge decides to give him a chance, to let him off prison, and to get him help, but he makes William promise to remember his face, if ever he considers going down the wrong path again. We see William later when faced with the temptation of drugs, remembering the judge and turning away. Many years later we see him again, being told that he’s dying from cancer, and sorely tempted to ease his pain by turning to drugs. He sees the judge’s face and ignore it, but then Randall knocks on his door and comes back into his life.
Later, both judges are sitting in a room together and wonder if they’ve done any good recently, and they don’t know.
From Bad to Worse
In the present, Kevin continues to abuse painkillers and alcohol. He and Sophie have an argument when she becomes upset that he keeps putting off plans to come visit her. He decides to make it up with a surprise visit and a surprise proposal.
He arrives in New York, but after having a dream of a reality where he and Sophie are married with a son and he’s a neglectful father, he goes to Sophie and breaks up with her, saying that he is nothing and all he will ever do is disappoint her.
Proposal: Take Two
Toby is nervous about breaking the news of the baby to his mom, since she’s Catholic and will not be pleased about a child born out of wedlock. Kate suggests they get married at the court house the next day.
At first, they’re both keen on it, but Toby starts to wonder if it is really what Kate wants in her heart. He ends up talking about it to Jack’s ashes. It’s a funny moment but also a rather touching one. It’s nice to see Jack serving as a source of good for their relationship, rather than a shadow hanging overhead.
The next day, Toby proposes to Kate and says if there is any part of her that wants the big wedding, then that’s what he wants to do.
The Prodigal Mother
Randall has to take Deja to visit her mother in prison. Deja is very excited but once they get there, her mother refuses to see her.
Back at the house, Beth is furious that the woman would hurt her own daughter so badly. Randall decides to go visit the mother himself and discovers that she was beaten up and didn’t want to Deja to know. At first he tries to lecture her about what a poor mother she has been, which feels like he’s crossing a line, and the mother pushes back and stands up for herself and insists once she’s out of prison she will want her daughter back.
At first Randall is inclined to fight for Deja, as is Beth when she hears about it, but Randall thinks of William and he thinks of Rebecca and Jack and all the big life decisions over the years that were made on his behalf, and he’s not so sure that it’s as easy as that. He gives Deja’s mother their phone number and has her call her daughter.
If nothing else, we saw this episode, with scenes from the adoption as well as William’s life, that Randall’s adoption wasn’t a clear-cut easy matter with no negative side effects. He got a wonderful, happy family, but others suffered along the way, and like the judges in the past, Randall doesn’t know if he’s doing good or not, but all he can try to do is his best.
