This Is Us The 20’s Season 2 Episode 6 Recap
Trick or Treating
In the past, the kids are getting ready to go trick or treating. They argue about what order to visit the houses in. Randall has drawn up a map with a plan and wants to stick to it, while the other kids want to head straight for the haunted house. In order to keep the peace, Rebecca volunteers to take Randall and sends the others off with Jack.
At one of the houses, Randall gets upsets when someone mentions the fact that he’s adopted. He and Rebecca talk about it and she has to explain about losing Kyle and finding Randall. Later that night, Rebecca tells Jack how much she wished he’d been there and how lost she would be without him. A poignant moment when contrasted with the rest of the episode and how lost all the characters are, but particularly Rebecca, as we look in on the Big Three in their twenties.
Beth is pregnant with her first child and Randall still struggling after his first breakdown. Kate is working at a diner, and spends time sitting in her car outside where their childhood house used to be. Kevin is in LA, working at a hair salon, and hasn’t had an audition in months. Rebecca is still single and all but admits to not feeling like part of a community anymore.
Kate has a crush on one of her regular customers at the diner. She meets up with him on Halloween. They have sex at her house and when he tries to leave afterwards, she guesses that he’s married and admits to suspecting it for some time.
Kevin is growing discouraged that his career isn’t going anywhere. His roommate books a part in a movie and invites Kevin to a party he’s going to. At the party Kevin completely embarrasses himself, going so far as to try to steal his roommate’s role in the movie.
Beth and Randall are tiptoeing around each other. Beth is scared that he’ll have another break down and Randall is determinedly trying to keep it together, even though you can see he’s on edge. When he goes to the hardware store to pick up a new fan, he tells the store clerk everything about what’s going on with him. It’s a look both at Randall’s fragile state but also an amusing moment to watch the store clerk have to hear it all. But the clerk does actually have one answer, telling Randall that once the baby is born it will all make so much more sense; which is when Randall gets a call from Rebecca, telling him that Beth has gone into labor.
Randall runs back to the house. The ambulance doesn’t get there in time. Randall and Rebecca deliver the baby together.
Later, after Beth has been taken to the hospital, Rebecca breaks down and cries, sad that she couldn’t share this moment with Jack.
Kevin and Kate come to visit the baby. They admit to each other how messed up things are in their lives but resolve to fix them.
Rebecca goes to visit the new baby in the hospital, and the episode cuts back and forth between the first time she spoke to baby Randall and her greeting to her new grandchild. She talks about beginnings, how one baby lead to another but also the middle bits of life.
“Life has a middle too, and middles can be the hardest because that’s when you can get really lost.”
It’s beautifully juxtaposed with scenes of Kate moving to LA and Kevin joining an improve group, both determined to find their way.
The episode ends with Rebecca joining Facebook for the first time and receiving a message from Miguel.
