The Walking Dead The Damned Recap Season 8 Episode 2 – The Walking Dead has had it’s fair share of criticism regarding the show’s laborious pace and hollow writing, so last week’s action packed episode was a hopeful return to form. Unfortunately, this week’s episode “The Damned” proves just how difficult a task it will be for the writing to keep that momentum going.
The Walking Dead The Damned Recap Season 8 Episode 2
The reason why is because even during an episode with what feels like an hour long shootout, disjointed breakaways to misplaced drama between characters does it’s part to weigh the action down. In this episode Rick’s group is divided into sets of three each with an individual mission. Rick and Daryl search the Compound for weapons, Aaron leads the fight outside in the parking lot, Ezekiel and Carol roam the woods to pick-off approaching Saviors to the Kingdom, and Jesus, Tara, and Morgan raid a satellite guard post.
In Jesus’s group, when him and Tara come across a lone Savior, it’s Jesus that urges calm over anger by not killing him. Tara doesn’t understand why the Savior should live and Jesus reminds her that it’s not what they do. Morgan didn’t get that memo though because while this is going on is mercilessly and mechanically executing each Savior he encounters in the halls. Eventually Jesus and Tara come face to face with a fully armed group of Saviors but it’s Jesus who convinces them to lay down their arms and surrender. Tara isn’t please with this and gives Jesus a reminder that it’s Rick who is in charge and will not agree with this either. Morgan nearly shoots one of the Saviors but Jesus is able to calm him down in hopes of bringing him back to his peaceful nature.
While Ezekiel leads his group in the woods, his upbeat nature bothers Carol. She doesn’t understand how he can be so uplifting during a war. Ezekiel waits for the group to walk ahead of him and he pulls Carol aside to remind her that he’s “faking it to he makes it” in his real voice. Carol seems amused by this but when she realizes it works, she appears to admire him as a leader, especially when Shiva jumps out from the bushes to kill a Savior they were hunting for.
Back with Rick, he’s carefully searching the Compound for weapons and comes face to face with a guard. After a violent scuffle, Rick kills him by impaling him on a nearby hook. In the next room though he notices a sleeping infant and realizes he’s killed it’s father. While reflecting on this someone comes from behind and puts a gun to his head. It’s Morales back from the first season of the show. Many may not remember Morales but he’s one the original groups of survivors from the camp settlement outside of Atlanta.
The show ends with that scene but overall this was an episode that seemed more like filler than anything the really advanced the story line.
