Outlander Freedom and Whisky Recap Season 3 Episode 5
The news that Roger brings to Claire should please her but instead only sends her into more turmoil. Roger has found an article from 1765 by an Edinburgh printer that contains a quote from a Robert Burns poem that would not be written for over twenty more years. Clearly, the printer has knowledge of the future and is, thus, Jamie.
Claire begins to have doubts about going back to the 18th century. It has been twenty years. Does Jamie still love her? Approaching 50, is she still physically attractive? A male friend at the hospital reassures her that she is indeed still sexy.
Claire, Brianna, and Roger (who is experiencing an American Christmas by, among other things, watching episodes of “Dark Shadows”) attend a reception to celebrate the creation of a fellowship in the memory of the late Frank Randall. Claire runs into her late husband’s mistress, who calls her out for not letting Frank go, thus robbing him of any happiness that he might have had.
On Christmas Eve 1968, Claire watches the iconic broadcast of the Apollo 8 astronauts that included the reading from the Book of Genesis from orbit around the moon. She makes her decision at that moment to go back to the past and seek Jamie out, for if the men of Apollo 8 can take a leap of faith into the unknown, so can she.
Claire spends what is likely her last Christmas in the 20th century with Brianna and Roger. She is already packing for her journey, including modern medicines from the hospital, some period coins, and a history book that would have served her well during her first voyage through time.
The next scene, Claire is getting out of a carriage in 1765 Edinburgh. She finds the print shop, enters it, and hears Jamie’s voice calling to her, thinking that she is someone else. She walks to where she can see him at his desk and then calls to him.
Jamie turns, the same beautiful, red-haired highland laddie that she remembered. He takes one look at Claire and then swoons dead away.
