Outlander Surrender Recap Season 3 Episode 2 — It seems that the vast majority of this season of Outlander is all about waiting for that infamous print shop scene, in which — spoiler alert! — Jamie and Claire finally reunite after a tortuous 20 years. Those who have read the books, of course, know what all happens in the course of that 20 years (and was extensively covered in Voyager, the third book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series). The beauty of the show, however, is that they take these first few episodes to establish the character development arcs for the benefit of those who haven’t (or won’t, for whatever their reasons) read the books.
And such, too, is the case of “Surrender,” which focus on the prisons that both Jamie and Claire are in when they’re not around each other.
Outlander Surrender Recap Season 3 Episode 2
And so it is that we happen upon Jamie, years after the Battle of Culloden but still haunted by its ghosts both British and Scottish, and Sam Heughan does a terrific job in playing the hollowed-out shell of a man that Jamie once was. Fergus’s hand getting lopped off, unceremoniously, is more of a catalyst for Jamie than it is for a development of a character arc for Fergus (although the latter would make more sense).
When Jenny, Jamie’s sister, tries to argue against Jamie turning himself in to the British prison, he argues that no British prison would be any different than the prison he’s in now. Jeez!
Meanwhile, in Boston, Claire’s in a prison of her own. We’ve watched the tragedy of Frank Randall unravel before our eyes just as much as we’ve watched the Ballad of Jamie and Claire, and Claire, of course, is trapped in a marriage with a man she doesn’t love anymore (and, unfortunately, they both know it). For all the finagling she did last season to do everything in her power in the past to make him alive in the present, it seems like such a waste to let their marriage (however much of a sham it is, at this point in the story) go to waste. But, such is their state now.
In the next episode, we promise to see more agonizing, and hopefully, less body parts being lost.
