Hooten & the Lady The Caribbean Recap Season 1 Episode 8 – The final episode of Hooten and the Lady takes us to the Caribbean and a tropical island where Hooten is looking for one half of an old pirate treasure map. A great hunt for the final episode.
Hooten & the Lady The Caribbean Recap Season 1 Episode 8
He’s rather surprised when Alex shows up out of nowhere, two days before her wedding. When she learns that Hooten already has one half of the map, she wants to come along too. But he says no after they can’t agree on who will get the emerald ring, Hooten or the museum. Alex finds the second half of the map before he does and it becomes a competition to see who will find the treasure first.
One of the best comic relief elements in this episode is the tour guide that Alex hires to get her through the island. With juice, wet cloths, and absolutely everything she could possibly need, her travels with him are the antithesis of anything she’s ever done with Hooten. In fact this episode has some great funny moments all around and some really good jokes.
Back in London, Edward starts to wonder about this supposedly ‘urgent’ trip that’s lead Alex to run off. Ellie explains that Alex is simply upset about the way both sets of parents have taken over the wedding and she’s bad at confrontations. She promises Edward that it has nothing to do with him.
When neither Hooten nor Alex can find the treasure without the other’s piece of the map, they finally start working together, while still squabbling over who will get the emerald ring.
But just as they dig up the treasure a group that appears to be gangsters show up, steal the treasure, and take Hooten and Alex out in the middle of the ocean where they abandon them in a life raft.
It seems the pair is stuck and they spend the night out on the ocean. But Edward comes to the rescue the next day. He flew out to the Caribbean to surprise Alex and learned from her tour guide that she was in trouble. Edward and Hooten finally meet and it’s hard not to notice how completely different they both are, but still quite likable.
The Wedding Day
Edward tells Alex that they are skipping out on their London wedding altogether. They are getting married here in the Caribbean. He wants her to love her wedding day, not just to endure it. He even thought to bring her dress. It’s official. Edward is amazing.
But before the wedding, Hooten enlists Alex’s help to retrieve the items from the treasure chest. They sneak on board the boat owned by the gangsters but are caught. It turns out they’re not really gangsters, simply wealthy history buffs who, due to a misunderstanding, feel that the treasure map was stolen from them. It’s a clever, unexpected twist, that plays off all the many gangsters and thieves Hooten and Alex have run into over the course of the show.
Hooten and Alex manage to escape, taking the items from the chest with them. Knowing Edward is waiting to marry her on the beach, Alex starts to panic, wondering if she’s really ready to get married, or if she is being unfair to Edward. Hooten encourages her, telling her how wonderful she is, and how lucky Edward is to have her. Hooten says good bye, telling her of his plans to go off on an adventure to Vietnam.
As Hooten sits on the beach alone, contemplating a drinking binge before throwing the bottle in the ocean, Alex finally marries Edward.
Later that night, Edward asks Alex where she’d like to go for a honeymoon. Her answer? Vietnam. We flash-forward a week and Hooten and Alex are once again in a jam and bickering about how to get out. Alex mentions that Edward things she’s off buying a hat, and the episode (and sadly the show) ends as the two keep bickering.
Since it is the show’s end, I would have preferred to see Edward right there with them, then end us in the rather unsatisfying territory of Alex being pretty unfair to her husband of one week by running behind his back with Hooten. But despite an ending that just barely missed the mark, there was a lot to love about the final episode. There were great funny moments, some clever twists, and a fun treasure hunt.
It’s a shame the show won’t be returning because Alex and Hooten are both extremely fun characters who I greatly enjoyed watching and the show had a lot of potential. It didn’t always live up to it, but it was a solid first season and I think it would have only gotten better with time.
