Hooten & the Lady Ethiopia Recap Season 1 Episode 5 – There’s wedding plans, kidnappings, and puzzles, in this episode of Hooten & the Lady, that tries something a little different and doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Hooten & the Lady Ethiopia Recap Season 1 Episode 5
Alex and Edward are in the middle of planning their wedding when Alex hears from her colleague Ella. Ella has been captured in Ethiopia. She is being held hostage in exchange for an ancient Sabean spoon that belongs to the museum. Alex is willing to do whatever it takes to save her friend so she steals the spoon and enlists Hooten’s help.
At the docks in Ethiopia, the pair meet with a contact sent by the kidnappers. It’s a tough, hard as nails woman who is definitely an entertaining character, though an underused one. We soon learn that the kidnappers have no intention of a peaceful exchange. The woman tries to kill them both. Hooten realizes it’s a double-cross and the two just barely manage to escape. They go off to find Ella on their own, with the woman in hot pursuit.
The woman catches up with them only to quickly plunge to her death off a cliff in what is a pretty humorous moment. Hooten and Alex’s car soon follow her off the cliff and the two have to buy camels in order to continue.
The Queen of Sheba
Ella managed to give Alex a clue as to where she was being held. Alex and Hooten find the kidnappers encamped near an ancient Ethiopian Monument. According to legend, the monument was supposed to point towards the treasure of the Queen of Sheba. The spoon, together with a Sabean bowl that the kidnappers already have, are the missing pieces to finding that treasure.
While distracted by a phone call about wedding plans, Alex is captured. The leader of the kidnappers insists that she and Ella work together to find the lost treasure for him. In what feels like a character departure from previous episodes, Alex keeps insisting that it’s likely a myth.
Ella and Alex work together to figure out how to use the spoon and bowl to point their way towards the lost treasure. It’s a great part of the episode, as it really does feel like an intriguing puzzle and it’s fun to watch the two women working together.
As Alex and Ella are driven off to the site of the treasure, Hooten follows on camel-back. The site of the treasure turns out to be a forest of dead trees. Alex realizes the trees themselves, now long dead and valueless, were Sheba’s lost treasure.
Infighting breaks out between the kidnappers and they soon end up in a standoff, guns pointed at each other. Hooten shows up, knocking out the only kidnapper who had a gun on the girls, and the three ride off on their camels.
It’s interesting that the show tried something a little different with the plot this episode, but the kidnapper angle of the story just wasn’t that interesting. The best moments were when Alex and Ella were solving ancient puzzles and finding lost treasure.
There were some really humorous moments however, particularly with the camels and Alex trying to make wedding plans on the phone while out in the middle of the desert dealing with kidnappers. These moments ensured that the episode was still fun to watch, even when hitting some wrong notes.
