Hooten & the Lady The Amazon Recap Season 1 Episode 1 – Lady Alexandra Lindo-Parker (Alex for short) works for the British Museum and lays her job on the line in getting funding to be sent to the Amazon to discover the last camp site of Percy Fawcett, a man who went looking for El Dorado, the lost city of gold.
Hooten & the Lady The Amazon Recap Season 1 Episode 1
Off To a Rocky Start
Her mission goes a bit awry when she ends up in trouble with a group of natives after a man named Hooten accidentally shows up and causes a misunderstanding which gets them both captured. Hooten is a bit of a mix between Han Solo and Indiana Jones, an adventurer who’s very much out to make a profit.
Alex suggests Hooten challenge the tribe’s strongest warrior to battle in order claim their freedom. This works, until the tribe discovers that Hooten stole a miniature golden skull from them and the pair end up having to make a run for it, racing to Alex’s boat and escape down the Amazon together.
Right off the bat there’s an adversarial relationship between the two. The kind with a whole lot of fun back and forth bickering that TV shows love so much. And it is done well here.
Hooten wants to be dropped off at a supply post but Alex refuses to delay her search for the camp. Of course he tries to steal the boat, with Alex outwitting him and stealing a piece from the motor so he can’t make off with it in the night.
Together the two find the camp, complete with Fawcett’s skeleton. In the skeleton’s hand she discovers a scrap of paper: a map…to the lost city. Hooten agrees to help her find it, but only because he wants a cut of the gold.
Thieves and Scoundrels
The pair head to a supply post, so Alex can contact the museum which has since sent out a rescue team to search for her. She shows the map to Pascal, the man in charge of the rescue team, who decides to go after the city for himself and not report that Alex has made contact.
Alex discovers that Hooten stole the skull. The two have a fight with Alex calling him a thief and storming off. But she quickly ends up hanging over a cliff in sore need of help and he’ll only agree to if she apologizes for calling him a thief. Their banter is actually pretty fun and you can see that these two characters work well together and will be enjoyable to watch over the course of the show. As Hooten tries to pull her up, they both end up falling down the cliff and find themselves at the entrance to the lost city. But as they’re enjoying their discovery, Pascal shows up, shoots Hooten in the shoulder, and ties up both of them.
Showdown on a Helicopter
Pascal loads his helicopter up with gold, and takes Alex with him. Hooten manages to cut his bonds, and jumps onto the bottom of the helicopter just as it takes off. He climbs on board and he and Pascal have a mid-air fight. (Which in a humorous moment knocks the golden skull out of the helicopter and right back in the tribe’s camp).
Just as the chopper is about to crash, Alex and Hooten jump overboard into the river beneath them, and Pascal dies in the explosion. The map also gets destroyed, and the pair don’t think it’s likely they’ll be able to find the lost city again. Though you’d think once you knew it was out there, the British Museum would be happy to pay for a team to search for it, all things considered.
Back in London, Alex uses some of Fawcett’s belongings which she brought from the camp to create a display, and Hooten returns to his apartment in Rio De Janeiro. He sells a diamond he smuggled all the way from the Amazon, and donates a majority of the proceeds to a church, keeping only a hundred for himself. It seems there’s more to Hooten than meets the eye.
It was a strong first episode. Some of the humor was a little off, mostly during the scene where our heroes are captured by the tribe, but the duo have a lot of charm and charisma and are just so much fun to watch that you’re left eager to see what adventure they’ll get up to next.
