Master of None Thanksgiving Recap Season 2 Episode 8 – Like other episodes that focus on characters other than Dev, Master of None is at its best when it zeroes in on the lives of those in his orbit. In this case, his childhood friend Denise.
Master of None Thanksgiving Recap Season 2 Episode 8
Thanksgiving is the theme of this episode but at the heart of it is how Denise comes into her sexuality as a lesbian and reveals it to her family through out different family gatherings. In the first flashback, Denise and Dev are children and we see that on Denise’s bedroom wall are pictures of different women in pop culture. Years later she her mother finds her ogling at Dangelo’s “Brown Sugar” music video but it’s the females in the video that gets Denise’s attention. Through out their younger years, Denise’s mom (played wonderfully by Angela Bassett) teases her about how close she is with her “boyfriend” Dev, but it’s relatively playful and they have no idea of her growing attraction to females.
Years later when they are both teenagers, Denise finally comes out to Dev. Dev isn’t surprised and is supportive of it but he wonders why she hasn’t told her family. Denise explains to her that in black families, accepting a gay child isn’t always that easy. Denise ends up waiting until she’s in her early 20’s to actually come out and the reaction she gets isn’t exactly warm but probably not as bad as she anticipated. The reason why, she explains, isn’t that she’s upset at her it comes out of a concern that she doesn’t want her life to be any difficult than it already is as a black woman.
Jumping forward a few more years, Denise begins to to invite girlfriends over for Thanksgiving. One girlfriend of hers is hard to accept since she seems ditsy but when Denise brings a more mature one over, her mother still struggles to be warm to her. It’s not until 2017 when Denise brings the same girlfriend over that her mother realizes their relationship is for real and a loving one. Her mother makes amends with her girlfriend and ultimately puts into practice the nurturing relationship she’s always had towards Denise.
Denise allowed her mother to get to a loving place on her own and the way the episode detailed it over the years was masterful. This was one of the standout episodes of the season and probably the season’s best due to it’s timely subject matter, great writing, and terrific acting.
