The White Princess Traitors Season 1 Episode 5 Recap – “Traitors” begins five years after the previous episode. It has been five years of peace in England as it turns out.
The White Princess Traitors Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
However, with the Duchess of Burgundy championing the cause of the boy identified as Prince Richard of York, the prospect of war is heating up. Impudently, the Duchess invites King Henry and Queen Elizabeth to Burgundy for a visit to meet the boy.
Instead, King Henry sends Lady Maggie and her husband Richard Pole. While in Burgundy, Maggie meets with the boy calling himself Richard and is taken by him. They never met before, but Richard does answer questions accurately about life at court before the Tudor triumph.
Nevertheless, following her husband’s advice, they tell King Henry what he wants to hear, that Richard is an imposter. They return to England with a bag of seals of all the people who have written to Burgundy, including those of Queen Elizabeth’s mother, Elizabeth Woodville, having been released from the Abbey on her daughter’s urging.
The Queen confronts her mother about the treason, noting that she is now entirely on the Tudor side thanks to her children. Woodville makes things worse by interrupting a ceremony making her grandson Henry (the future Henry VIII) Duke of York, Richard’s old title. The Queen orders the guards to remove her.
Edward, the Earl of Warrick, is still in the tower, now a teenager, now insane from the isolation. Maggie tries to comfort him with presents, but to no avail. His mind is quite gone.
Meanwhile, Lady Margaret, the King’s mother, is found in the chapel trying to pray for forgiveness for her part in the murder of the princes in the tower, Edward V and his brother Richard (if the boy in Burgundy is in fact an imposter.)
Jasper Tudor overhears her and Margaret confesses the deed. Jasper declares that he will tell the King everything, even if it devastates him. Instead Margaret murders Jasper and makes it appear that he has succumbed of his infirmaries. King Henry is inconsolable at the news. Jasper was the one father figure he had ever had.
