Class Brave-ish Heart Season 1 Episode 5 Recap – April and Ram are stuck in the realm of the Shadow Kin while the others are left behind on earth to deal with the ever growing numbers of murderous flower petals.
Class Brave-ish Heart Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
Duel for the Crown
The shadow realm is a landscape of darkness, fire, and black rock. April is determined to kill the King and protect Earth. Not that she has any other option at the moment for she admits to Ram that she can’t find her way back to their world.
The Shadow King realizes that April has come to his realm and assembles an army. The Shadow Kin have a custom that when the King is called out, he must fight a duel with his challenger and the winner shall claim the thrown.
April and the King lock swords and begin their fight.
Flowers or Shadows?
Ames informs Quill that the Governors are determined to protect the school, and believes that there is no way to destroy the flowers except to force Charlie to use the Cabinet of Souls.
Tanya goes to tell Ram’s father about him leaving and brings him to the school, while the others meet up with Quill and learn about the flowers.
Quill is furious at Charlie for lying about the cabinet and the two argue, Matteusz adding a welcome bit of both sanity and levity to their fight. But their debate about right and wrong, the past and present and the use of the cabinet is interesting and poses some questions for which there are no easy answers.
Rather than help Ames to convince Charlie to destroy the flowers, Quill wants to use the souls to abandon Earth to its fate and destroy the Shadows and avenge their people.
Charlie grapples with the decision. If he uses the cabinet, all the souls of his people will be lost. He will be completely alone, and he worries that he will also lose Matteusz who would never stand by him if he committed genocide. But in a touching act of love, Matteusz promises him that he will always be there for him.
Defeat of a King
April and Corakinus continue their duel, April frequently gaining the upper hand only to lose it again when she has to save Ram.
Her reaching into her mother’s chest last episode has cured her mother but also created a magical bond between the two. Using this, April mentally finds Earth and is able to cut open another tear between the worlds, and her father and Ram’s father leap through it to be with their children.
April manages to defeat Corakinus and must choose whether or not to kill him. Their shared heart will mean that she would die along with him. Her father pleads with her not to make the same choices he did, and eventually she chooses not to kill Corakinus and instead has him locked away in a tomb while she is made the new King of the Shadow Kin, and everyone returns back to Earth.
The New King
The petals have moved on to killing people and it is quite a gruesome, torturous death.
Charlie begins the process to activate the weapon. But he still wavers between which race to send the souls after. Quill gives an outstanding and heart wrenching performance, trying to persuade him to send them after the Shadow Kin. But just as he is on the verge of making the decision, April realizes that she can send the Shadows after the petals.
She summons her new army and it destroys all of the petals before she sends them back once more to their own realm and closes the tear behind them. Corakinus breaks the portion of their connection which gave her his powers and she reckons this makes her no longer King. A shame. King April was an fun development, but I can see why it might have made any monsters attacking the school in the future, not much of a threat.
April asks her father to go until she chooses to contact him again. It makes sense that given what he has done; things are not magically repaired or fixed because of the events of the episode. It feels more real. But there is a happy note for her family. It will take time for her mother to regain full strength in her legs, but she stands for the first time in years and takes a step.
The headmistress talks to Quill and admits that the governors were fairly certain that the Shadows would be used against the petals and that they now know much more about the cabinet and how it works. They are grateful for that and still wish to restore her freewill.
There were a lot of interesting conversations this episode. From Ram and April discussing his religion, to Charlie’s ethical dilemma, the episode took on some weighty matters. All in all it was a weighty episode that didn’t hold back.
