The White Princess The Pretender Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
Queen Elizabeth persuades her husband the King to let the real Earl out of the Tower to participate in a parade and the wedding of her sister Margaret so that the people can see that the boy in Burgundy is a fake. The plan backfires when some of the townspeople start to proclaim the young Earl as the real King of England. Henry’s men snatch him up and carry him back to the Tower.
While the Duchess of Burgundy lands an army of Flemish mercenaries in Ireland to stir rebellion as a step toward an invasion of England, Queen Elizabeth slips out of the palace to visit her mother, Elizabeth Woodville, to see if she is plotting against her husband. The queen’s mother lies to her daughter by telling her that she has been cut off from writing letters to anyone when in fact she is in correspondence with the Duchess of Burgundy and is an active participant in the plot.
King Henry confronts his wife about the visit. Queen Elizabeth points out that now that they have a son, Prince Arthur, she is now completely a Tudor. The Queen will not participate in any Yorkist plot that will place their child in danger. She also makes Henry promise not to engage in the battle with the invaders.
Henry leads his army against the invading army. He watches the action from afar as his troops soundly defeat the invaders and capture the hapless boy pretender, Lambert.
When it comes to deciding what to do with traitors, King Henry decides on mercy, Lambert, who was just a child and a pawn for the adults, is given a job in the royal kitchen. As for Elizabeth Woodville, the King decides that when his wife next visits her, she should inform her that the King is in good health. The queen’s mother has done her worst and has failed. Also, in a sign that he is starting to trust his wife, he finally evicts his own mother from the queen’s apartment and grants it to her.
Finally, back in Burgundy, the Duchess has another visitor. It is a strapping young lad who may well be the lost prince, Richard of York, thought to have been murdered in the Tower with his brother, Edward. Now the Duchess has another pretender with whom to strike at her Tudor enemies.
