Riverdale The Lost Weekend Season 1 Episode 10 Recap – It’s Jughead’s birthday in “Chapter Ten: The Lost Weekend,” and that means we get an episode that’s primarily focused on Jughead’s relationship with Betty and the kinds of trauma he experienced in the past thanks to his disjointed family. The episode finds Betty throwing Jughead his first birthday party, inviting all of his friends over for a small gathering despite Archie’s protestations that Jughead doesn’t like to remember his birthday; and, in true Riverdale fashion, everything goes wrong, from Jughead’s outbursts to Cheryl and Chuck showing up to ruin the fun by exposing nearly everyone’s deepest secrets.
Riverdale The Lost Weekend Season 1 Episode 10 Recap
“The Lost Weekend” is an important episode for Jughead, but it’s also a moment where Veronica gets to make some big decisions. She’s been struggling with her father’s incarceration, but after Archie reveals Clifford Blossom’s supposed involvement in getting Hiram Lodge arrested, Veronica wants to find out for herself what kind of man Hiram really is. She’s been hesitant to testify for or against her father, but after reviewing the details, she eventually decides to do so for the good of her family. This comes after Hiram essentially throws Veronica’s mother Hermione under the bus, writing to Veronica that she’s not as innocent as she at first appears. It’s an important decision for Veronica, one that leaves her torn between potentially letting a murderer go free or getting her family back together.
But it’s not the only big event that happens to her in “The Lost Weekend.” At the party, she and Archie finally connect once again, sparking recurring feelings they felt way back in the first episode when forced into the closet at Cheryl’s party. It feels like Riverdale is working up to its Betty vs. Veronica moment, or at least forcing Betty to make a decision between how she feels about Archie and her relationship with Jughead.
That dynamic is amplified when Jughead freaks out about his surprise birthday party, because he lashes out at Betty for misunderstanding what he wants. Betty is clearly trying to do something nice for Jughead, but he sees it as a way to mold him into the person she wants him to be. It’s the first real fight that they’ve had, and one that does indicate the type of issues that both will have keeping this relationship alive: Jughead’s not like everyone else, but neither is Betty, and Jughead realizes she’ll eventually need to choose between him and Archie.
The party itself leads to a number of reveals as Cheryl and Chuck stir up controversy, the most important being Betty’s mental break when she nearly drowned Chuck in the hot tub. Obviously Chuck isn’t letting that go, and it does bring up some chilling revelations about Betty that even she realizes – there’s something that’s not quite right about her, and she doesn’t quite know what she’s capable of in that state.
While “The Lost Weekend” doesn’t do much with its murder subplot, it’s still a vital moment in Riverdale‘s first season. It gives even more context to the motivations of the Riverdale teens and also sets up some potential twists in the latter part of this season, including Hiram Lodge’s release from prison. It’s hard to see where Riverdale goes from here now that Archie’s mom (Molly Ringwald!) is back in the picture, but one thing’s for sure: the plot is going to get even more complicated, and Riverdale‘s soapy drama continues to be a tremendous success.
