The firm gets a new client: Dylan Stacks. He says that he is being set up for cyber terrorism. A code has been put on his laptop that will attack the power grid of the city and create a blackout in Chicago that evening. He wants the firm to get a deal from the Feds for him: offering to disable the malware in exchange for immunity.
Lucca is tasked with going to Colin with the information. She gives him a flash drive with a copy of the malware, but when the flash drive is plugged into one of the government computers, it uploads the malware onto it.
The Feds take Lucca in and hold her as a material witness until she names the client and later charges her as a co-conspirator in the terrorism saying that she gave Colin the flash drive on purpose to infect the government computers with the malware.
Adrian takes the case and Maia decides to choose him as a partner to follow, not taking his ‘no’ for an answer…just like he told her too. What is so interesting about it is that Maia, while concerned for her job, is much more motivated in this instance out of concern for Lucca. Lucca has been there for her since the beginning. It’s nice to see Maia return the favor. Maia’s loyalty is one of her strongest and more endearing qualities.
Colin is put on the stand to testify about the flash drive and when Adrian cross-examines him, humiliates Colin by making out that he’s trying to punish Lucca for breaking up with him.
The firm starts looking for the real culprit behind the attack. Stacks thinks it may be someone he’s talked with online, and when the firm looks at the users he interacts with, they realize that one of them is Felix Staples, a character from a previous episode.
Diane talks to Staples and he admits to knowing the username of the real hacker and agrees to set up a meeting in exchange for some legal help of his own.
The Feds in turn play dirty by having the trial take an hour off for and then going back in session before Adrian has time to return, forcing Maia to take over for him in cross examining Staples, and she does Adrian more than proud. It’s fun to see Maia come into her own and get tough.
Later, Staples sets up a meeting with the hacker with the authorities on hand to make an arrest, and it turns out that the real hacker was Stacks all along. With the arrest made, Lucca is cleared of all charges. But the malware still strikes the power grid and the city has a blackout.
In the darkness Adrian and Diane talk about how they feel as if something is wrong in the country and that for them the law represents the only thing, the only constant, that they can stand by. It’s a nice, quiet moment in which you really understand the fight, good or otherwise, that these two are fighting.
Earlier in the episode, Diane finds out that Kurt was in the hospital and had surgery after trying to stop a carjacking and saving a baby from the stolen car. For a few minutes upon receiving the news, she thinks he may have died, and later is awed by his act of heroism. Later, he tells her that he loves her and promises to never hurt her again and she agrees to give him a second chance.
The FBI offers Henry a deal of thirty-five years jail time and he decides, rather than going back to prison, he’ll go on the run, making arrangements with a contact of his. His lawyer later informs him however that the deal has changed: its thirty-five years jail time in exchange for Maia not being prosecuted for perjury as a result of her interview with the FBI from last episode.
Henry has a final dinner with his wife and daughter, telling them that he’s accepted the deal and then confessing to Maia that he’s guilty and that he, Jax, and Lenore had all been in on it.
A car comes up, supposedly his lawyer to take him to prison. But it’s not. It’s his contact. He’s still going to run.
Lucca goes over to Maia’s apartment to thank her for all her help, just as the FBI shows up to tell Maia that he father has run and she is being arrested.
This was a great episode. From the great pacing in the Lucca/cyber terrorist plotline to the quieter character moments and final surprising twist of Henry going on the run, there wasn’t a single moment that felt off or didn’t keep you hooked. The only shame is that it was the season finale and we’ll have to wait to see how things play out.
Overall it has been a strong first season for the show. Locking the show behind CBS All Access may have kept some viewers away, but those who did watch it got a smart, witty show in which even the worst episodes were vastly entertaining and had characters that really grew on you. They certainly won my heart by this finale. Thankfully, it’s already been renewed for a second season!
