Big Little Lies Serious Mothering – Episode two begins with a mysterious flashback followed by shots of Jane and Madeline being abruptly woken from sleep.
Review and recap Big Little Lies Serious Mothering
Jane’s son Ziggy grills her mercilessly as to why they moved to Monterey, and she manages to dodge him for the moment. Ziggy later helps an inquiring mind at a local bakery who is interested in Jane’s story, to understand that she doesn’t like answering questions about the past, and it would be best to save time by not asking.
Perry reveals more of his controlling personality, and accuses Celeste of intentionally changing school plans so he would miss the twin’s first day of school. The relationship reveals another twist as the argument first turns physical, and then turns sexual, as the makeup becomes an anger fueled sexual domination that both of them seem to thrive on. Though Celeste submits, her discomfort with her husband’s inability to control his temper becomes apparent, and she suggests they see a therapist when he returns from his next business trip.
Madeline finds out the community based theatre project she is working on is being sabotaged by her feud with Renata, and the mayor of Monterey is on the opposite side with the power to kill the production. She pleads with Celeste to consider dusting off her law license to help fight the good fight for the first amendment.
Renata furthers the feud by planning a birthday party and choosing to invite everyone in the class except Ziggy, who has been labeled as a monster for his alleged choking of Amabella, and for his latest blunder, which was attempting to convey an unwelcome kiss to Amabella to make amends for the previous friction.
Meanwhile, Madeline’s husband Ed puts his foot down and shows his displeasure with Madeline’s obsession with her ex-husband and his new disgustingly perfect wife, who she learns has recently taken her eldest daughter Abigail to planned parenthood to get birth control. This further fuels her territorial behavior, and strains the relationship, which prompts a meeting between the husbands, Nathan (Abigail’s father) and Ed.
Nathan thought it might be productive to get Ed on his side, and ask Madeline to lighten or abandon her hatred for Bonnie for the good of their daughter. Ed made it clear that he feels Madeline is being civil, and that he won’t be intimidated or threatened by Nathan.
Just when the audience forgets that this story is actually about a murder, a well-timed shot of the witness interviews or news conference interrupts the story. No further information is revealed about the crime, and it appears there is no reason to expect a revelation in the near future.
