A Series of Unfortunate Events The Wide Window Part 1 – So now we’re off into the next book of the series, book 3, The Wide Window. This episode is merely the first part of the book.
Review and recap A Series of Unfortunate Events The Wide Window Part 1
The Baudelaire children have been sent to live with their Aunt Josephine (Alfre Woodard) whose house literally sits precariously on the edge of a cliff that overlooks Lake Lachrymose. Upon meeting Aunt Josephine, the orphans find her to be a pretty confusing woman. For living in such a dangerous house, she’s VERY careful. She lives her live in constant worry that something terrible will happen, such as the doorknob shattering and tripping over the rug.
The orphans learn that she has been this way ever since her husband Ike died years ago. He hadn’t waited a full hour before swimming, only waiting 45 minutes. This would normally only cause cramping, but when you swim in Lake Lachrymose before that hour is up, you get attacked by the Lachrymose Leeches. These leeches can smell food from miles away and have 6 rows of very sharp teeth.
Aunt Josephine also dedicates her life to grammar and has a whole library full of grammar books and textbooks. She and her husband Ike used to be very close friends with the Baudelaire parents.
With Hurricane Herman on the horizon and on his way, Aunt Josephine goes down into town to stock up on food and supplies. While away, the children dig around her library and find her safe, where she keeps Ike memorabilia and photos from her past. Looking at these, the orphans discover that she used to be very adventurous and wasn’t afraid of anything.
Aunt Josephine returns home with a new companion…who actually turns out to be Count Olaf in another ridiculous disguise. He’s now “Captain Sham” and sporting an eye patch and a peg leg. Aunt Josephine’s convinced of his disguise while the children see immediately who he really is, and is yet again, unable to convince their guardian of his true identity.
Captain Sham takes Aunt Josephine out to dinner while his acting troupe guard the children at the house. Realizing they’re in another terrible situation, they decide they need to find a way to escape the clutches of the evil count.
As the children are upstairs planning their escape, they hear the sound of a shattering window and rush down to inspect it, only to find that the large window overlooking the lake has indeed been shattered and that Aunt Josephine has left a suicide note.
I can’t stress just how amazing this show is, and really just keeps getting better. It’s always fun to see what new and outlandish outfit and voice Neil Patrick Harris is going to have Olaf do. And Alfre Woodard as Josephine was a great choice.
