The Missing Das Vergessen – RECAP: In the previous episode of Season 2, Baptiste returns from Iraq to learn that the girl identifying herself as Alice has committed suicide. He teams with police officer Jorn Lenhart to find out where the girl was in the three hours she was missing before returning home to incinerate herself. Jorn comes up with the answer when he shows Baptiste a CCTV video which shows the girl coming out of a florist shop with a bouquet of Statice flowers. What she does with the flowers next surprises Baptiste. Why would she put the flowers on Henry Reed’s grave?
Another mystery is the conflcting data about the DNA lab tests. Was it Alice who burned herself to death in the shed? Was it Sophie? Or was it the third girl Gemma discovers in those photos of the captive girls on the roller coaster ride?

In Episode 5, Julien is getting closer to the truth even while he refuses to get treatment for a brain tumor. Will the collapse of his health ensure that he never solves the mystery? Maybe “Das Vergessen” provides a clue? I don’t speak German but “Vergessen” has something to do with forgetting. There seems to be a lot of forgetting going on, particularly with retired Colonel Adrian Stone.
But in Varren Switzerland, there is a girl who could be the twin of Alice. She’s met a garrulous shop boy who has a crush on her. Once more he crushes on her and again she brushes him off. Strangely, she traipses through the forest to an abandoned van where she has a pet dog and a shelter. She seems to know her way around, for she goes to an abandoned, moss-covered shack in the woods and destroys the red-rimmed eyeglasses she took from the van.
After last week’s twists and turns, one could easily get the impression that Sgt. Eve Stone miscarried. Not true, as we learn in this episode. Though she’s bled from complications of her pregnancy, the baby is delivered by emergency C-section, and placed in the care of her married sister. Surrogacy, she explains.
Back in 2014, Jorn Lenhart and Julien Baptiste teamed up to learn some things about alleged suicide Daniel Reed. After obtaining Daniel Reed’s phone records, the duo finds that Daniel made a large number of phone calls to a mystery man. They track that person to a house of prostitution where they learn that Daniel Reed’s ‘mystery man’ has become Ilsa, an employee of the house. There’s a great deal of entertainment value, and much more to tell, in that visit alone, though it’s all kind of forlorn, and in its way – touching.
After a time, Ilsa confides to Baptiste and Jorn that she went too Daniel’s house as a customer and found him dead on the floor. Baptiste concludes, after a series of questions, that Ilsa had nothing to do with Daniel’s death.
With all that’s happened, the Websters are a damaged, dysfunctional family. Sam has broken off his affair with Eve and wants to return to England. Sam and Matthew are still at odds over Matthew’s complicity in ‘Alice’s’ suicide by incineration. Matthew doesn’t want to leave his skinhead buddies and go to England. Gemma feels the same way, but for different reasons. She wants to remain in Eckhausen until she finds the truth about Alice.
Baptiste’s next move is to follow the trail outlined by Mirza Barzani. Barzani has told Baptiste that the soldiers, including Colonel Stone, killed a girl during their military operations of the Gulf War. A difficulty is presented by the fact that the Colonel, now retired and suffering from Alzheimer’s, is in a nursing facility. Baptiste shows up at the facility as a visitor and, to Colonel Stone, presents himself as a fellow soldier. In this way, he gets Stone talking about the murder(s) in Iraq. Baptiste gets tossed, however, when Stone becomes upset, and begins shouting orders as if he is commanding a battalion.
Sometimes the facts are where you least expect to find them. In the current episode, the military press spokesman Adam Gettrick pops in again, this time to tell the Websters that a French newspaper is doing an article about Matthew. It was Matthew, remember, who locked ‘Alice’ in the shed when she committed suicide.
Again, there is a great deal of shuffling back and forth between the events of 2014 and “The Present,” as the period titles suggest. In the present day, Jorn Lenhart has been taken out of uniform and now has a desk job. Assume that was for his indiscretions. Yet, he hasn’t lost his policeman’s chops for solving crimes. It is Jorn who finds the disturbing connection between one of the missing girls when he goes online to identify the third girl on the roller coaster. When he finds a match in an old newspaper article, he calls the mother of presumed runaway teen Lena Garber.
Plucky Jorn delves into the depths of the Lena Garber disappearance and finds a strange connection. Press officer Adam Gettrick of the Eckhausen barracks was a close friend of the Garbers. This is a hitherto unknown fact, and very unusual. Jorn goes by himself to Gettrick’s residence where events become even stranger.
He talks his way in to Gettrick’s house. The conversation is going well enough and routinely until a little girl appears. Jorn is taken aback for everyone knows the installation’s press officer.
“Oh, I didn’t know you had a child,” Jorn remarks, stooping to take a good look at the child.
“My ex-wife in London,” explains Gettrick, “I don’t get to see my kid very often.”
The child has a picture she’s drawn and, to make friends, Jorn asks the child to show him the picture. “That’s me and mommy in the basement,” the child says.
If in that final scene you placed a power drill, an angry press officer, an inquisitive and astute young cop, and a four or five year old child, you might wonder how it all fits together. But Jorn is dead. It’s too revolting to describe. The mystery deepens.
