The Good Fight Inauguration – Maia Rindell is a brand new lawyer, who has just passed the Illinois bar exam. Everything appears to be looking up for her. She is made associate at a one of the largest firms in the Midwest. In addition, her godmother Diane Lockhart is a partner at the firm, albeit on the verge of retiring, and her parents are wealthy, important people. This gives her a lot of favoritism within the firm and promises her a successful future.

The law firm is involved in a case that surrounds a man being attacked by a pair of cops. They are representing the county, trying to keep the settlement below five hundred thousand. It is meant to be Diane’s last case and she enlists Maia’s help on it.
Maia’s father, Henry, has an investment firm. The FBI launches an investigation against the firm and arrests Henry for stealing money from his clients, including all of Diane’s retirement funds. With nothing left, she is forced give up her dream home and delay her retirement, nor can she continue to live in the same style she has been and may be forced to move out of her current apartment.
However Diane has already signed her exit agreement and the firm does not agree to take her back on as a partner. Other law firms also are reluctant to take her on. She referred many people, including some clients, to the Rindell’s. This has tainted her for too many people.
Diana’s emotional reaction at having lost everything she has worked for, everything that has made up her life, is actually more heartbreaking than that of Maia’s reaction to the scandal, and in fact receives more focus during the pilot episode than Maia.
But there is time for Maia too and a look at the difficult position she is in. Diane turns against her. A man arrives at Maia’s law firm to publicly accuse and humiliate her. Lucca, a woman who is on the other side of the police brutality case and who was also an associate for Diane back in the day, stands up for her, and also gives her advice on how to deal with the situation she is in.
Adrian, a partner at the firm suing the county, offers Diane a job at his firm. His advice? “You got screwed Diane. You know the best response? You come with me and you screw them right back.”
Before everything fell apart, Maia figured out that a car at the scene of the crime in the Campbell case would have a recording of what happened. When Diane checks it, it shows that the police attack was completely unprovoked. When Maia is fired from the law firm, Diane uses this to put in a good word for her with Adrian, and assures Maia, that it’s not over yet.
All in all a very strong start to the show. We don’t know much yet about Maia and it was a little hard to get a bead on her character, but Diane had an exceptionally strong start and has already set herself up as both a sympathetic character but also a really fun one to watch.
The drama surrounding Maia’s father and his firm is intriguing and it seems likely there may be some layers of mystery there that will be able to peel back during the first season. Hopefully the show will have a chance to do so, despite episodes three an onward will only be airing on-demand on CBS All-Access, which is not a promising arrangement.
