The Good Fight First Week – It’s both Maia’s and Diane’s first day at their new law firm. The first episode focused heavily on Diane, but this is Maia’s episode and our first real chance to see her in action.

One of Maia’s first jobs is to help give pro-bono legal advice to the employees of a union. One of the people is a man named Frank who says that the company he works for, BMI, claims that Frank stole 400 shoes and pressured him into signing a confession. He insists that he is innocent.
Maia takes the case to an arbiter. Lucca attends the meeting as a sign of support. But when the arbiter judges against Frank, Lucca decides to take the case to court.
The law firm doesn’t want to take the case, considering it too small, but Lucca and Maia decide to work on it on their own time. They attend a Freedman Method course, the investigation method used on Frank by BMI to attain his confession.
At the seminar, Lucca realizes that a massive number of retail stores send representatives to these seminars, making it a much bigger case than it previously appeared, as there are potentially dozens of employees who might have been forced into false confessions. This convinces Adrian and the firm to take the case, even though it makes the union furious.
When their financial backers don’t like the case’s current judge, Adrian puts Maia on the case in order to force the judge to withdraw as he lost money in her family’s scandal. Surprisingly, Maia doesn’t seem terribly put out at being used in this way.
The new judge is a familiar face for Good Wife fans: Judge Abernathy. And he inserts a great note of humor into the proceedings.
It’s actually a pretty interesting case and the show takes the time to explain it so that viewers can be invested in the outcome.
During the trial, Lucca lets Maia question the teacher of the Freedman Method course, and she bats it out of the park. We see for the first time what a fighter Maia really is, how dedicated, and how determined.
Ultimately the case is dismissed after evidence comes out that Frank stole money at a previous job. A fairly unexpected ending actually that promises The Good Fight isn’t going to make things too easy for our characters. Maia got a distraction from her problems as she focused on Frank’s troubles. But she doesn’t get to win. And there’s another blow in store for her.
She is told that her mother’s breast cancer has come back but it turns out to be just a lie. Realizing that her mother only said it because she was lonely, she decides to go visit her. But when she does she finds her in a compromising situation with ‘Uncle Jax’, her father’s partner, the man who went to the FBI in the first place, and the man her father claims really stole all the money.
The Good Fight had a strong premiere, as we got to know Diane and Maia, and both of them promise to be intriguing leads. Hopefully we’ll soon get to know Lucca better too.
