Ash vs Evil Dead Home Again – Our little buddy, Pablo, is dead. He gave his life destroying the demon, Baal, but Ash is already hard at work finding a way to bring him back. And by that, we mean Ash is drunk and high doing donuts in his car with Pablo’s body in the passenger seat.
Review and recap Ash vs Evil Dead Home Again
While Ash is drunkenly confessing his lament, he hallucinates that Pablo is talking to him and asks, “If you could go back in time, and change one moment in your life, what would it be?”
Ash says that he would stop himself from ever reading that book, to which Pablo replies, “So do it.”
Fans of the series will know that Ash already traveled back once to the middle ages in the third film, “Army of Darkness,” so this moment has been long-awaited.
After picking up Ruby and Kelly, Ash forces Ruby to recite the passage that will send them back in time. She concedes and opens a portal to take them back to 1982.
When they arrive, Ash tells them the plan to stop young Ash from reading the book and they head to the cabin.
But somehow, though he hasn’t been to the cabin yet, the evil is already unleashed in the woods and goes after them. Ash is separated from Ruby and Kelly and hides in the cabin until the evil leaves.
Ash starts looking for the book, but can’t remember if he found it on the table (like in Evil Dead 2) or in the cellar (in Evil Dead 1), because each of the movies presented a slightly different origin due to a production rights issue. It’s a subtle meta-joke that longtime fans will appreciate.
Before he gets two steps into his search, Ash steps on a nail which quickly starts to turn his leg black. Ash recognizes it as the same evil infection that took his hand, and decides to stab himself in the leg to suck out the poison like an evil snake bite. But the evil forces its way down his throat and Ash tears apart the kitchen trying to drink something to kill the thing now growing inside him.
After he downs a kettle of boiling water, a tiny demon fetus emerges from his mouth before Ash crushes it with a frying pan. That’s when he hears a woman calling for help from the cellar. This can only end well.
He finds a human Henrietta (the big bad from Evil Dead 2) chained to the wall, and she tells him that her husband has gone crazy after finding the book of the dead and locked her down here.
Professor Knowby comes home with a young girl who believes she’s there to help translate the book. Ash hides when he brings her into the cellar, and she gets her leg caught in a bear trap.
Seeing that Knowby really has gone crazy, Ash finally decides to free Henrietta, just before Knowby reveals that a demon got into his wife, which he hopes to transfer to the girl.
While Henrietta attacks, Ruby and Kelly are caught by the living vines of an evil tree. Just as the tree is about to pull Kelly under, she snaps off a branch and throws it to Ruby who stabs the tree in the eye. The eye explodes and they’re tossed away, free to escape. Ruby comments that “it could have been worse.” (In Evil Dead 1, the tree scene got WAY worse.)
Back in the cellar, Ash tries to get the girl free, but Henrietta tosses him aside as Knowby escapes and locks them in the cellar.
Ash stabs her with the chainsaw, but it locks up and she knocks him to the ground again.
Ash and the girl try to break free of the cellar with no luck. As Henrietta approaches to kill them, the scene cuts to black and we have to wait until next week for the finale.
This episode is one of the best of the series so far, and chock full of callbacks to the original films. Fanservice can be a tricky tool, but as always, this show handles it masterfully, keeping it subtle enough that new fans won’t be confused.
Only one more episode to go! Will Ash defeat Henrietta and break free of the cellar? Will Ruby and Kelly arrive in time to save them? Will they succeed in bringing Pablo back to life?
Til next week, fellow ghostbeaters!
