The History Channel Texas Rising a scripted, ten-hour series begins after the fall of the Alamo to the Mexican Army of General Santa Anna, the military dictator of Mexico. The siege of the Alamo is an often-told tale, most famously by John Wayne in a magnificent if somewhat historically inaccurate 1960 movie. Most people also know that weeks later, General Sam Houston and the Texas Army put Santa Anna’s troops to flight at the Battle of San Jacinto, thus winning Texas independence.
Review and recap of History Channel Texas Rising
The History Channel series is an attempt to add detail to the birth of Texas, focusing as much on ordinary Texans as it does on the more famous players, not the least of whom is Sam Houston, played by Bill Paxton. Deaf Smith, known better in the Lone Star State than he is outside it, also plays a prominent role. The series also depicts the fact that Native Americans, who were in what is now Texas before Mexicans or Anglos, were players in the events of 1836 as well.
The series focuses on the creation of the legendary force known as the Texas Rangers. Because of the series starring Chuck Norris, the Texas Rangers are well known as a law enforcement agency with officers who wear cowboy hats and have a certain mystique, as the phrase, “One Riot, One Ranger” would indicate. It is also the name of a major league baseball team. But in 1836 and for a long time after, the Texas Rangers were a military organization that predated the War for Texas Independence. In their history, the Texas Rangers fought Native Americans, Mexicans, and the United States Army in the Civil War before assuming their role in law enforcement, tracking down bandits in the late 19th century. In their beginning, the Texas Rangers were a multiethnic organization, enlisting Anglos, Hispanics, and Native Americans.
The series should, therefore, be seen as the story of the Texas Rangers as much as it is about the War for Texas Independence. That fact alone gives “Texas Rising” the potential to have more than just a single season.
